A Life of 120 Years
Rethinking How Humans Age
Perspectives on Traditional Chinese Longevity Medicine | Dr. Li Ting-I, Doctor in Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine
We have been taught since childhood:
People grow old, people get sick, and eventually, people die.
Because of this, most of us accepted a concept very early on:
Aging is an inevitable downward slope.
* Physical strength begins to decline at 40.
* Metabolism worsens at 50.
* Chronic diseases increase at 60.
* Muscle mass is lost and mobility declines at 70.
* More care from others becomes necessary at 80.
And then, we call all of this:
“Normal aging.”
What Is “Normal Aging”?
However, I have always pondered a different question:
What does “normal aging” actually mean?
If a 60-year-old person already suffers from high blood pressure, diabetes, fatty liver, joint degeneration, sleep disorders, muscle loss, and chronic inflammation…
Should we really attribute all of this to:
“Getting older”?
Or is a significant portion of it actually something that could have been discovered earlier, intervened in earlier, and adjusted earlier?
This is precisely why I have begun focusing on Traditional Chinese Longevity Medicine today.
True Longevity Is More Than Just Living a Long Time
My goal has never been merely to stretch out the numbers of a person’s life.
If someone lives to be 120, but their final 20 years are spent in disease, pain, dementia, frailty, loss of mobility, and the inability to live independently, that is not true longevity as I understand it.
What I truly pursue is:
-The simultaneous extension of lifespan and healthspan.-
In other words:
Living long,
coupled with:
Living healthily for a long time.
Modern aging science is increasingly placing emphasis on this direction as well. Scientists no longer just study how to prolong life; they aim to extend the healthy years during which a person can maintain physical function, cognitive ability, independent living, and quality of life.
Therefore, what I am truly chasing is not:
“Living to 120 years old.”
Instead, it is:
“If the human body possesses the potential to live longer and healthier, can we do our utmost to protect that potential?”
Why “120 Years”?
To me, 120 years old is more than just a number.
It is a symbol.
It represents:
– Refusing to accept decline too early.-
I am from Taiwan. From a young age, I was influenced by traditional Chinese views of life and wellness culture.
“Chi bai-er” (eating to 120) is a Taiwanese dialect expression for the advanced age people ought to enjoy, and the pursuit of even longer life has always existed within thousands of years of Chinese medicine, wellness practices, and life philosophy.
Consequently, 120 years old gradually became a benchmark in my mind.
It does not mean:
“Everyone can definitely live to 120.”
Rather, it means:
“Just how far can we push the potential of human healthy life?”
The highest reliably recorded human lifespan exceeds 122 years.
Thus, 120 is not a figure completely detached from human biological possibilities.
Yet, it is definitely not an outcome that modern medicine can guarantee to any single individual.
For me:
120 years old is a vision, a direction, and a question I wish to investigate.
We Cannot Wait Until Physical Decline Appears
This is a critically important belief of mine regarding longevity medicine.
Traditional medicine usually steps in **after** a disease manifests.
However, longevity medicine poses a different question:
– What happened to the body before the disease appeared?-
Many illnesses do not emerge suddenly.
* Before blood pressure is formally diagnosed as hypertension, it may have undergone years of changes.
* Before blood sugar officially meets the criteria for diabetes, insulin sensitivity may have declined for years.
* Before kidney function is found to be significantly reduced, the body may have lost a considerable degree of its reserve capacity.
* Before muscle is truly and noticeably lost, physical strength and mobility may have already degraded year by year.
* Sleep issues, stress, metabolism, hormones, and chronic inflammation may have quietly shifted long before a disease officially surfaced.
Therefore, I believe:
**True longevity medicine should bring the timing of medical intervention substantially forward.**

The Earlier We Start, the More We Can Protect
If a person’s body still possesses:
* Good kidney function
* Good cardiopulmonary function
* Adequate muscle and strength
* Good metabolic capacity
* Stable sleep
* Good digestion and absorption
* Stable emotions
* Good recovery capacity
Then we are: **Protecting health.**
However, if an individual has already entered:
* Severe kidney disease
* Severe cardiovascular disease
* Severe metabolic disease
* Severe muscle loss
* Neurodegenerative disease
* Advanced cancer
* Multi-organ function decline
What we face is no longer just “wellness maintenance.”
It is: – How to protect remaining life functions and physical reserves.-
The difficulty of these two scenarios is entirely different.
Therefore, I have always believed:
Longevity medicine should begin as early as possible, rather than waiting until the body is beyond reversal.
Why My Longevity Medicine Is Not a Fixed “Package”
This is also why my approach to longevity medicine is not a set “fixed menu.”
I do not believe everyone should:
* Take the same supplements.
* Drink the same tea.
* Eat the same foods.
* Do the same exercises.
* Sleep the exact same hours.
* Use the exact same acupoints.
* Take the same Chinese herbal formulas.
Because:
**Every single person’s body is different.**
And this is precisely one of the most precious wisdoms of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM): **Personalized medicine.**
The True Value of TCM: Tailoring to the Individual
TCM has never simply said:
“This disease gets this medicine.”
Instead, it asks:
“What is the current physical state of this individual person?”
Take insomnia, for instance:
* One person’s condition might stem from dual deficiency of the heart and spleen.
* Another’s might be liver qi stagnation transforming into fire.
* Another’s might be yin deficiency with blazing fire.
* Another’s might be phlegm-heat disturbing the heart.
The name of the disease can be identical.
However:
**The state of the human body can be completely different.**
This is the core of TCM’s “differentiation of syndromes and treatment” (Bian Zheng Lun Zhi).
And it is why I believe TCM can play a vital role in longevity medicine.
What I Want to Know Goes Beyond Your Disease
If you become my longevity medicine patient, what I want to know extends far beyond:
“Do you have high blood pressure?”
I want to understand:
Your Innate Constitution
* Your congenital endowment and family history of health and longevity.
* Which of your body’s systems have been relatively weak since childhood.
* Which organs are your vulnerable links.
* Which areas require long-term protection.
#### Your Metabolic State
* Blood sugar and insulin sensitivity.
* Blood lipids and body fat distribution.
* Liver function and muscle metabolism.
* Your body’s chronic inflammation status.
We need to see more than just an isolated test report. Rather: **In which direction is your body heading?**
Your Kidneys
The kidneys are one of the systems I focus on particularly in longevity medicine. I care about more than just:
“Are your lab numbers normal?”
Instead, I care about: **How is your kidney function changing?** Is it getting better year by year? Is it stable? Or is it gradually declining? Because true longevity medicine cares about how bodily functions change over time, not just a single number on a single day.
Your Muscle and Strength
* Your muscle mass, strength, mobility, and balance.
* Your cardiopulmonary function and recovery capacity.
Because true longevity does not mean lying in bed until you are 120. Instead, it means: Having the capability at an advanced age to live—to walk, to travel, to care for oneself, to think, to communicate with others, to enjoy life, and to retain dignity and autonomy.
Your Sleep and Life Rhythms
* When you sleep, when you wake, whether you wake up in the middle of the night, whether you frequently stay up late, or travel across time zones.
* When you eat, when you exercise, and how much natural light you receive daily.
* Whether your lifestyle is synchronized with your biological rhythms.
Modern “chronobiology” has proven that the human body possesses highly complex 24-hour physiological rhythms, and sleep, light exposure, diet, and activity timing can all impact our biological clocks. This forms a deeply fascinating dialogue with concepts proposed by TCM thousands of years ago: **”Correspondence between heaven and human” (Tian Ren Xiang Ying) and “midnight-noon ebb-flow” (Zi Wu Liu Zhu).**
Your Work and Living Environment
Because a person’s work may be impacting their body every day. Your work hours, work stress, long business trips, cross-timezone travel, night shifts, sleeping environment, dietary environment, chronic psychological stress, interpersonal relationships, and family environment can all become part of longevity management.
Furthermore, **your emotions and life state are also worthy of being seen.**
Humans are not isolated organs. Our bodies are always interacting with our emotions, stress, family, work, interpersonal relationships, and life goals.
This is actually an essential component of the TCM philosophies of “unity of form and spirit” (Xing Shen He Yi) and “correspondence between heaven and human.”
Therefore, I do not wish to turn longevity medicine into:
A bottle of pills, a single prescription, or a dietary supplement.
Because:
– A human being is not a product.-
I Don’t Just Want to Treat You; I Want to Teach You to Understand Your Body
This is a deeply important part of the doctor-patient relationship I wish to build.
I do not want my patients to rely on a doctor forever.
I hope that after long-term collaboration, you begin to truly understand yourself:
* You know what lifestyle choices cause you to decline.
* You know what foods suit you.
* You know when your body needs rest.
* You know when your body is falling out of balance.
* You know what changes require attention.
* You know when you need a medical checkup.
* You know what is happening inside your body.
Ultimately, I hope:
– You become the person who understands your body best.-
And I am your physician, observer, analyst, and long-term health strategist.
Why I Choose an In-Depth, Long-Term, Personalized Medical Model
True, personalized longevity management can never be accomplished through a single 15-minute consultation.
Nor can it happen by meeting once a month while remaining completely unaware of what actually happened to you that month.
Because:
– The human body changes every single day.-
A person’s health is also not determined by a single prescription.
It is:
Accumulated day by day, 365 days a year, year after year.
Therefore, if we truly wish to protect a person’s healthy lifespan, I believe what a doctor needs to understand is not:
What symptoms do you have today?
Instead, it is:
– How do you actually live your life every day?-
The Five Tiers of Longevity Medicine I Have Built
Tier 1 | Innate Constitution:
Understanding your congenital endowment, family background, and physical vulnerabilities.
Tier 2 | Prevention:
Detecting changes occurring in the body before a disease truly forms.
Tier 3 | Optimization:
Improving overall bodily states through sleep, diet, exercise, metabolism, stress management, and life rhythms.
Tier 4 | Repair:
Helping the body restore function and self-regulation as much as possible when imbalance has already occurred.
Tier 5 | Preservation:
Protecting organ function, muscle, cognitive capacity, and overall vitality as much as possible as age increases.
This is not a one-time treatment.
It is a form of:
– Healthcare that spans a lifetime.-
What Role Does TCM Play in This Longevity Medicine Framework?
I do not believe TCM should merely be positioned as an auxiliary adjunct to modern medicine.
TCM possesses its own complete philosophy of life. It studies:
* Essence (*Jing*), Qi, Blood (*Xue*), Yin and Yang, the Five Organs and Six Bowels (*Wu Zang Liu Fu*), Spirit (*Shen*), Nutritive and Defensive Qi (*Ying Wei*), the Four Seasons, and Constitution (*Ti Zhi*),
* Along with a vitally important concept: **Treating unformed disease (Zhi Wei Bing).**
Modern aging science studies aging from another angle:
* Cellular senescence
* Chronic inflammation
* Mitochondrial dysfunction
* Stem cell exhaustion
* Genetic and epigenetic changes
* Metabolic imbalance
* Decreased bodily recovery capacity
These are all aging mechanisms currently researched by modern science.
I will not claim:
“Ancient TCM already knew all of modern molecular biology.”
Equally, I will not say:
“Modern science has proven all theories of TCM.”
Neither statement is sufficiently rigorous.
What I truly want to do is:
**Build a bridge between these two medical wisdoms.**
To investigate:
* Where do they mutually corroborate one another?
* Where are they merely superficially similar?
* Which ancient TCM concepts deserve re-investigation?
* Which modern scientific discoveries can help us understand TCM more precisely?
This is what I understand to be:
– Modern Traditional Chinese Longevity Medicine.-
From Critical Care to Preventive Medicine
Over the past 15 years, I have dedicated myself to critical care medicine, which has made me all the more convinced of the immense value of preventive medicine.
For many years, I have faced patients whose lives were already under severe threat, including those with severe chronic illnesses, advanced cancer, and patients requiring dialysis.
These experiences gave me a profound realization:
When a person’s organs have already suffered severe damage, we can still strive to maintain life, function, and quality of life.
However, at the same time, I became even clearer on this:
**The later medical intervention happens, the more limitations we face.**
Therefore, the next phase of my life’s work is to move the problem upstream.
Not just:
How do we help someone when their condition is already severe?
Instead, it is:
**Can we begin protecting a person’s life before they reach that step?**
### What I Truly Want to Do Is “Life Management”
* Not purely anti-aging cosmetic treatments.
* Not a quick fix or weight loss program.
* Not dietary supplements.
* Not a fixed wellness package.
Instead, it is:
– True Traditional Chinese Longevity Medicine.-
A human-centric, long-term, in-depth, personalized medical model.
I hope my patients do not come just to treat illness:
“Doctor, I’ve been feeling really uncomfortable lately.
Instead, they come to prevent illness:
*”Doctor, what state is my body in right now?”*
*”How much health reserve does my body still have?”*
“How should I protect my organs?”*
*”What else can I do to stay healthy for the next 20, 30, or 40 years?
120 Years: The Foundational Longevity Goal I Wish to Offer My Clients
Although I cannot guarantee to anyone:
“You will definitely live to 120.”
Because today’s medicine lacks the capability to make such a guarantee to any single individual.
However, I am willing to pose another question:
If humanity truly possesses a healthy life potential greater than the current average lifespan, should we do our utmost to protect it?
My answer is:
**Yes.**
We cannot control all genes.
We cannot control all accidents.
We cannot control all diseases.
Nor can we control the ultimate end of life.
But we can strive to influence:
* How early we begin to decline.
* How much physical function we retain.
* How long we maintain our recovery capacity.
* How many years of our lives are genuinely spent in a state of health.
My Longevity Philosophy
I believe:
True longevity is not about fighting death.
Rather, it is about:
– Not letting life prematurely lose the strength it was meant to possess.-
True longevity medicine is also not about searching for a magical pill.
Instead, it is about understanding:
* Your constitution
* Your organs
* Your diet
* Your sleep
* Your exercise
* Your emotions
* Your work
* Your interpersonal relationships
* Your living environment
* Your biological rhythms
And then, re-integrating these factors through long-term, continuous, personalized medical management.
Because true longevity is not just extending life.
It is – extending the time a person can truly enjoy life.-
120 years old is our mission. It is our direction.
The true goal is to have health accompany your life for as long as possible.
To help you live long.
And even more importantly, to help you **live long in health.**
To allow your body to approach its innate life potential as closely as possible.
